Smaller, faster, cheaper: there have also been rapid developments in the size of hard disks over the last 40 years. For instance, the formerly very widespread 3.5″ hard disks have largely disappeared from the market - they are now only rarely used as SCSI server drives. There is a good reason for this: with the new ultrabooks, tablets and netbooks, mobile computing is becoming increasingly handy and powerful. Here the trend is clearly towards slim and fast solid state drives that are connected to the motherboard via an M.2 slot.
In the server sector, the 3.5" and 2.5" sizes are still being used in the 20s of the new millennium. This is because hard disks of this size can be easily installed in rack servers. The answer to the question of which server hard disk is most suitable here and how long a hard disk for servers will last is: always go for hard disks that have been specially designed for use in servers. They do not differ in size, but mass-produced server hard disks score with other plus points:
- usually longer warranty
- more robust construction for continuous operation
- generally longer life and lower risk of data loss
- lower vibration due to optimised firmware
The market leaders in the field of server hard disks include Western Digital, Seagate and Toshiba. In the SSD sector, there are also other manufacturers such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron, Toshiba (Kioxia) and a large number of Chinese producers.
